National Review endorses Mitt Romney

December 11th, 2007 Urban Conservative

Mitt Romney

It’s official. Today, the National Review announced their support for Mitt Romney to run for President for the following reasons:

  • he is a is a full-spectrum conservative
  • he is a supporter of free-market economics and limited government
  • he supports right to life and the preservation of marriage
  • he maintains a foreign policy based on the national interest

The article clearly articulates why they are endorsing Mitt over other Republican candidates, specifically Huckabee, McCain, Giuliani and Thompson and state the following:

Romney is an intelligent, articulate, and accomplished former businessman and governor. At a time when voters yearn for competence and have soured on Washington because too often the Bush administration has not demonstrated it, Romney offers proven executive skill. He has demonstrated it in everything he has done in his professional life, and his tightly organized, disciplined campaign is no exception. He himself has shown impressive focus and energy.

It’s my belief that Romney will be elected as the next President of the United States. He is natural leader, a wise business man, good communicator and most importantly, he maintains a strong stance on national defense.  This was clear during the Republican Debates where Mitt clearly outshined everyone else.

While it is difficult to pick a strong conservative for the primary elections, I have always been of the mindset to select the most conservative viable candidate in the race, and I too believe its Romney.

MITT ROMNEY WILL NOT WIN THE PRIMARY ELECTION. You too...Urban Conservative are deceived. Ron Paul is THE ONLY TRUE conservative running in the primaries.

Besides, Mitt is Mormon; and most people believe that Mormonism is a cult. The voters will never accept that!

Besides, RON PAUL is the only candidate that can beat Hillary of Obama. Wake up and realize that this is trhe TRUTH.

While I hope and pray that a Republican wins (though not Ron Paul-- he gets so agitated when the camera zooms in that I think he's about to have a stroke), I just can't find anything in Romney's personality that strikes me as unique, individual, or even sincere. Believe me I'm not giving up, everyone who has met Romney says he and his family are the nicest people ever, and I focus on the front runners and what they say with an open mind... But Romney seems like a vacuum salesman to me. He isn't in used car territory, but there's something about him that doesn't seem right. I just learned that between 7-20% of voters look mainly at personality traits when voting, and I think I've entered that sector. But hey-- if they aren't socialists, if they are strong on immigration, and if they can do what they promise to do, then I don't care!

Something about Mitt seems a little too perfect. I don't think that Mormonism is a cult though. Mitt needs to get that likeable aura like Huckabee has. The only reason I am "leaning" towards Huckabee is that he is articulate and his messages seem more optimistic than the others.

Our guy needs to really be a communicator. I am a Bush fan, but he is no communicator. If he had been a better communicator, I guaruntee his approval numbers would not be where they are at now because all of his detractors are the ones forming public opinion for him.

Mitt does seem articulate but he still has not closed the deal for me yet.

I am still in the undecided column if you ask me.

No surprise there. If you read their blog you can tell that is who they favor. I'm sure Hugh Hewitt is singing their praises.

Mike Huckabee is a deceiver. He claims to live his Christian values but can be a liar when it’s politically convenient—like most politicians. Let’s look at some recent quotes by the Governor of Arkansas

In regards to the Mormon Church: “'I think it's a religion,' he said. 'I really don't know much about it.

Mr. Huckabee has a degree in Theology and is an ordained Southern Baptist Minister….Either he is lying, an idiot or incompetent as a person of his religious education and professional background to profess not know anything about Mormons.

Any lay Baptist Minster can tell you about Mormonism to the full degree.

Gov. Huckabee was so in the dark about Mormon beliefs that he still know about the Evangelical code words that every LDS Missionary hears from Evangelicals around the world: “Don’t you Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan were brothers?”

He was not taken out of context nor misunderstood. Every Evangelical Christian in the world knew what he meant.

He is certainly playing the religious card for both receiving the Christian Right votes and to slam the former leader in Iowa, a Mormon. There is no ignorance involved on his part, as he claims.

Seems like this election as required a violation of the constitution to have a religious test in order to hold office.

It’s sad that Hillary Clinton will get the Democratic vote because she’s Bill Clinton’s wife and a woman; not her experience and political record (or lack there of).

It may be even sadder that Mike Huckabee is going to get the Republican nod by virtue of being an ordained minister, and not on his record –including being soft on crime and immigration.

Like another Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee has much in common with Bill Clinton: both are liars and Southern Baptist; except Clinton may have been tougher on crime.

Must say, extremely surprised by this endorsment. NR endorsment will really have legs in the Conservative community, but I can't escape my concerns here.
Mormons believe that an angel descended to earth and handed golden objects to a flesh and blood human being (Joseph Smith) in upstate New York in the early 19th century! And that these objects represented a new will of God to create a new belief system.
As I recall until it became utterly untenable politically, the Mormon church believed the "mark of Cain" marking humans as either descended from Cain or Able was black skin -- and those black skinned people had been banished by God from Eden to what we would today recognize as South America. And the Mormon church, until dragged kicking and screaming as with multiple marriage to change that rule, banned any black skinned person from being a member of the Mormon church.
So to me, there is an awful lot of "creep" factor in Mormonism. That is not to say that Rommey is not a upright and moral man - I have no reason to think that he isn't, in fact he strikes me as a square up guy. But for me, that he subscribes to a mystical belief system as odd as Mormonism makes me very uncomfortable.

@ bd - dude, you really need to get a life. All you do is come here and call me names; but you never come with a viable argument. It's liberals like yourself that make my job so easy … schmuck!

@ Shane – yes, you are right. Although, I am not sure how significant an endorsement from NR really is. I guess we will see.

@ Ron Paul – keel dreaming buddy. We will see if you still come around after the primaries. I doubt it.

@ DBG – interesting argument. Quite honestly, Huckabee seems to be the most “normal” of them all. I really like him. Everyone else, including Romney, are seasoned politicians. Not sure how wise of a move it was to attack Mormonism. We shall see.

@ H Capper – dully noted about Mormonism. Thanks for stopping by and please come back again.

@ Carlos – what do you mean about Romney being a socialist.

Carlos – thanks for the comments. Quite honestly, I think there is a little socialism in every candidate. There is not one “true” -- socially and fiscally conservative running for office; but then again, there never really has been that ideal candidate.

Carlos,

I too am looking at our field of candidates and am scratching my head. You seem pretty well informed (especially for a country boy), so I would ask, who are you leaning towards? I am kind of torn at this point, because I have heard these rumblings about Romney, and then he goes and delivers an amazing political speech the other day. One that talks about the unifying history of America. One that seems to be more about inspiring then dividing. Unless you think he was just faking that, how can one not factor it in to their decision-making process?

Did anyone notice "bd" didn't use any caps when signing his name? Poor guy must not like himself too much if he won't even refer to himself using proper noun syntax.

Mitt's Mission Impossible is as follows;

1. Convince social conservatives (all parties) to ignore his liberal record as governor. Since his main point is that he wants to unite social conservatives - then he needs an issue to unite social conservatives. Unfortunately, Romeny has not been consistent on any major social issue in the past 5 years.

2. Convince all americans that it is FAIR for him to ask them to continue making military sacrifices in Iraq while neither he nor his 5 sons have ever had military service. Sure, his sons are not running - but if you think Gore was out of line for referring to Cheney's daughter's sexual orientation during a debate - try asking Camp Hillary to ignore this inconvenient truth about his son's or himself not serving while his Iraq plan is "stay the course and die for freedom?"

3. Try to distance himself from the LDS institution with regard to polygamy and black people becoming members while explaining how he will remain true to the faith of his fathers. Remember Trent Lot? Linking him to LDS institutional practices will be as effective as linking Gore to Clinton was for Bush/Cheney and as effective as linking Iraq to terrorism was for getting to sell the war to 67% of americans.

4. Explaining his position on abortion to ALL americans (4 positions in 5 years). Hillary will say "Up until 2 years ago, my opponent believed in abortion being "safe and legal". Today he has joined multiple men who think a woman does not know how to make the right choice about her body. Let's show these men that women do know how to make the right choice! - okay, Hillary will say it more tactfully, but you get the point.

5. Explaining his position on stem-cell research in the past 3 years to social conservatives.

6. Use his experience as a businessman to convince social conservatives that he can balance the budget and provide a great healthcare plan. Hillary reminds voters that the last time they gave a rich, republican businessman the keys to the whitehouse, americans were stuck with defecits, a war that costs too much, and tax breaks for the rich - "You know what Bill and I will do with the defecit, we will turn it into surpluses and we will not use tax dollars to fund an irrelevant war - VOTE FOR REAL EXPERIENCE AND CHANGE, THE KIND THAT MONEY CAN'T BUY.

7. Using his experience as governor to ask voters to trust him while asking them to ignore parts of that record i.e. his executive decision to define marriage as between person A and person B making GENDER AND NUMBER of the people irrelevant when defining marriage - remember the polygamist policies of LDS and how most americans believe that marriage is between one man and one woman (24 states have made this ammendment already including liberal states like CA or OR). Like Oprah stated "experience means nothing if the person is not held accountable for the decisions made while in office" - this could very well be true of Romney's Record.

8. When pitched against Hillary - Romney's record has enough to keep social conservatives/ evangelicals away from the voting booth on principle, giving Hillary the presidency by 41-45%. His record alienates women, minorities, people who care about abortion/stem cell research/definition of marriage, families with children serving in the military and Iraq currently....he will not get more than 38% of the voters. I left out the Hispanic community that believes that his firing of the company that used undocumented workers was pretentious - and camp Hillary will of course apologize for anyone who made comments about (all the morbid details of the contract he had with this company).....make that 35%.

Note: Romney's poll's have not changed much 11-25% despite all the endorsements and money spent on his campaign in the last 2 years. If nominated the MY projected outcomes are 20% stay home, Hillary gets 45%, Romney gets 35%. A republican needs 80% of evangelical/social conservatives to win the whitehouse without the support of women/minorities- Like in 1992, clinton is back in the whitehouse with 43% of the vote - de ja vue!

DBJ- Huckabee does not have a Theology degree he quit after 1 yr.

The NR nailed this one. Romney is the only one that has a chance vs Hill or Obama. Do a quick research on Huckabee he is full of dirty laundry. McCain is paying off the NY times to hush a camp $ story that will rock the nomination if it comes out and has amnesty bill haunting him. NY firemen are not even supporting Rudy. Rudy was giving tax payer financed protection to his mistress and has a scandal about the 9/11 radios, and has the abortion issue. Thompson just did not take off and is too far behind to catch up even if HE WANTED to.
So that leaves Romney....people will overlook LDS when they see he has a solid plan that appeals to conservatives and moderates. His record is clean and his personal life is squeaky clean. Hill and Obama will look like the antichrist compared to him.

Thanks for the comment. While I do like Huckabee as a person, I don't think he is the right man for the job. I think he would be a good VP though. I also agree with you the American people will overlook LDS and nominate Romney as the Republican candidate.

Romney was too liberal as a governor for my taste.

Rudy is far more conservative than people give him credit for. No, he won't outlaw abortion, but he stands for smaller government and low taxes. And he does have a record of supporting both.

New York underwent a major and positive transformation. Can you imagine what 9/11 would have been like in a NYC before Rudy? I don't even want to fathom it.

Anyway, because of Rudy the city budget went from deficit to surplus. Welfare recipients got jobs and unemployment lowered. All of this helped abortion - because women keep their babies when they are in a position to take care of a child. Simply passing a law isn't going to help them.

The radio scandal is ridiculous when you look at the facts, and it's a shame that conservatives and Republicans have left Rudy out to dry. He's a great leader, and should be our President. He has the best record of any candidate. Everything else is mostly talk.

"You are all right wing idiots! Wake up and smell the coffee...no one in their right mind agrees with scum like you. You are all backwards people."

This statement and similar ones I hear EVERY day (I live in a liberal town). It always boggles my imagination that liberals have CONVINCED themselves that 90% of the population think just like them, and only a small percentage of the population are fringe lunatics like us that actually disagree with them. Yet, we continue to win elections. This must be where all the conspiracy theory, election rigging stories come from because it is the only way they can reconcile the view that everyone agrees with them but they continue to lose.

I actually saw multiple people in a public place break down into tears when W won re-election. They were muttering that they just didn't understand how it was possible because "no one in their right mind agrees with scum like [him]." It was laughable, I broke out my camera phone to take pictures of them but my significant other stopped me....

I am not a Mormon but was a Romney supporter. However, at this late date, that is irrelevant. I would like to say that I have never heard of a Mormon attacking the U.S.A. I have heard of Muslims doing so and threatening to in the future. Although I do not refer to Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. as a Muslim, research on the Internet informs me that his background smacks of a close association to persons of that faith. His biological father was a Muslim. After Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. left the family, young Obama's mother, an atheist, married a second Muslim, an Indonesian who took the family from their home in Hawaii to Indonesia where Obama lived for 6 years and was educated in a Muslim school. This association plus the Louis Farrikhan connection removes all doubt from my mind as to who I will not vote for. Most of the general public is unaware of everything they should know about B. Hussein Obama. Believe me, he has much more baggage. If you don't beleive it look it up on the Internet. I would rather have taken my chances with a Mormon!

It's late, but I'm going to respond to A Hannity Fan's comment.

Or, rather, the assumptions which seem to be behind it.

Granted, Barack Obama's parentage has (nominally) Muslim elements. However, I haven't seen evidence that any of the people mentioned were particularly devout Muslims.

Although I accept - and affirm - that a person's background has an influence on who the person is, we are not defined entirely by our ancestors.

For example, all my known ancestors were Gaels and Scandinavians. Scandinavians, at least, were conducting routine human sacrivice to Odin well into historical times. The Gaels and Celts were also in the habit of sacrificing other people for ceremonial purposes.

Despite this, I have not personally conducted a human sacrifice.

The point is that people have free will, and can decide to part ways with their ancestral beliefs and practices.
