The Importance of Social Issues when selecting a Presidential candidate

January 7th, 2008 Urban Conservative

In my opinion, there will never be a perfect conservative candidate in any election.  When making a selection on the ballot, one must decide which candidate is closely aligned with his/her value system. As we embark on the 2008 Presidential Primaries, many issues have been raised about each of the Republican candidates; some which may vary on your degree of importance depending on your values.  Here are a few that come to mind:

  • Mike Huckabee pardoned a serial rapist who later killed a woman. I do think Mike is a good and moral Christian man who has strong convictions.  He is also very forgiving; an excellent trait for a pastor, father, etc. But, in a world filled with evil dictators and terrorists who want to kill our children, will he have the backbone to stand up against these goons? Or…to be slightly extreme, would he pardon someone like Osama Bin Laden if he repented and converted to Christianity? When it comes to morality and family values, I would say “YESâ€?, the Huckster wins that battle over the others, in a close tie with Mitt.  But are family values the most important issue?
  • Mitt Romney’s alleged “flip-flopâ€? on abortion.  This is a significant issue since he is running a “pro lifeâ€? campaign.  It’s also significant to note that Romney never really flip-flopped. Rather, he just flipped.  Unlike John Kerry – who was against, then for, then against again – Romney was for abortion, and then became pro life. He also admitted on national television during the Republican Debate in Florida that he was wrong. The fact is we all make mistakes, and we all change. Nobody has lived their entire life believing all the same things since birth. However, after some further research, I found an interesting fact that under Romney’s health care plan, Massachusetts residents have access to taxpayer-funded abortions for $50. Many claim that the provision to pay for the abortions was never really part of Romney’s bill; and that it was forced into the law by the Courts.  I have yet to find any evidence that this is true.
  • Rudy Giuliani’s alleged infidelity with now wife Judi, while he was still married to Donna Hanover.  During that time, Donna accused Giuliani of serial adultery, alleging that Judi was just the latest in a string of mistresses, following a rumored affair that he mayor had with his former communications director, Cristyne Lategano.

So no one is perfect…of course.  Just take a quick peak the Democrat ticket and their voting record.  But when selecting the next President of the United States, we have to consider a multitude of other issues when we make our decision (illegal immigration, healthcare, social security, economy, foreign policy, Iraq, education, etc.)  It comes down to what is important to you, the voter. And, it’s very possible that we may have a President that scores an F on the morality scale, yet takes no shit at all from Islamic fundamentalists or the mainstream media. One that just gets the job done without worrying about the insane ramblings of Pelosi or Kennedy.

For me, the number one topic of concern is national security. I am voting for the candidate that I feel will keep the United States most safe from terrorism, both domestic and foreign.  Without secure borders and an aggressive pro-active approach to terrorism, all the crap that liberals bitch and complain about will mean nothing. We will have to live our lives like our good friends in Israel, preparing daily for suicide bombers and then burying our children.  This is not a risk I am willing to take.

In a world where this is reality for many, how can anything be more important?

  • That's right, Helvidius--it's entirely your right to be so manipulated by media soundbites and powerful lobbies that you proudly disregard the wide range of issues that affect all of our lives every day.

The problem is that there are some issues that are important enough to trump others. The problem is that there are some people, a lot of people, who do align pro-choice with "abortion on demand," that believe it isn't life, it isn't murder, and that women should be free to use abortion as birth control. Being able to decide whatever issue is most important to me, even to the detriment of other issues, and to vote accordingly IS my right. THAT is America. What IS NOT America is choice. You have no right to choice. You have the rights enumerated in the Constitution and everything else is left up to majority will by way of representative democracy. Along those lines, there is nothing in the Constitution about right to privacy or abortion. Roe was the most intellectually dishonest decision in US history and overrode the will of 36 state legislatures illegally. We have a right, barring running afoul of the Constitution, to legislate that choice. Same as we legislate the choice to steal, rape and kill. I am not an Evangelical, but I am a one issue voter on abortion and gun control. If the candidate doesn't pass muster on those two issues, he or she could be perfect in all other respects and won't get my vote. I won't condone murder, and I won't let someone take away my right to defend against it. That is the end of the story.

These politicians do not work for the benefit of me and you. To continue recognizing and/or supporting the democratic or republican parties is to continue to fail humankind. These people have proved, time and again, to have interests outside of the large majority of the US population on their minds. Some signs:

    ever-widening wealth gap
    media consolidation
lack of health care for all
    lobbyists
    corporate donors
    indifference to the constitution
    lack of action
    lies pertaining to war
    electronic voting
    the list goes on

We are smarter than this. Stop finding petty reasons to create more divisions amongst people who should be working together for positive change. Stop supporting these parties because they do not act in our best interests. They act in their best interests. Start supporting third parties.

bd, next time keep flushing until all the shit goes down the toilet. You have unknowingly dishonored yourself and your fellow democrats by uttering your many twisted and sophomoric views upon the UC populace which are now stored for reference to idiocy.

Why not take refuge among common thinkers? Why not take the next logical step and leave the country you hate more than anything. There are some who would still love you.

No one issue should decide whether a candidate is the best choice. The best choice is the candidate who most closely matches your ideals on ALL of the issues. The Evangelicals do this ALL THE TIME with abortion. I am so sick and tired of this even being a political issue. It isn't. Pro-choice is NOT pro-abortion! No one is pro-abortion so we should all stop saying it so. In a perfect world all pregnancies could result in a life being born. None of the pro-choicers are out there arguing for women to go out and get pregnant and then abort fetus' just for the hell of it, just for fun. This is America and here in America we have a thing called choice. To take away the choice would be anti-American. You can personally believe or not in the choice for yourself but we cannot legislate the lack of a choice for everyone. End of story.

Republicans are probably the most immoral of everyone. You think killing innocent children in Iraq is moral? good luck finding a "moral" republican to vote for! LOL
