In my opinion, there will never be a perfect conservative candidate in any election. When making a selection on the ballot, one must decide which candidate is closely aligned with his/her value system. As we embark on the 2008 Presidential Primaries, many issues have been raised about each of the Republican candidates; some which may vary on your degree of importance depending on your values. Here are a few that come to mind:
- Mike Huckabee pardoned a serial rapist who later killed a woman. I do think Mike is a good and moral Christian man who has strong convictions. He is also very forgiving; an excellent trait for a pastor, father, etc. But, in a world filled with evil dictators and terrorists who want to kill our children, will he have the backbone to stand up against these goons? Or…to be slightly extreme, would he pardon someone like Osama Bin Laden if he repented and converted to Christianity? When it comes to morality and family values, I would say “YES, the Huckster wins that battle over the others, in a close tie with Mitt. But are family values the most important issue?
- Mitt Romney’s alleged “flip-flopâ€? on abortion. This is a significant issue since he is running a “pro lifeâ€? campaign. It’s also significant to note that Romney never really flip-flopped. Rather, he just flipped. Unlike John Kerry – who was against, then for, then against again – Romney was for abortion, and then became pro life. He also admitted on national television during the Republican Debate in Florida that he was wrong. The fact is we all make mistakes, and we all change. Nobody has lived their entire life believing all the same things since birth. However, after some further research, I found an interesting fact that under Romney’s health care plan, Massachusetts residents have access to taxpayer-funded abortions for $50. Many claim that the provision to pay for the abortions was never really part of Romney’s bill; and that it was forced into the law by the Courts. I have yet to find any evidence that this is true.
- Rudy Giuliani’s alleged infidelity with now wife Judi, while he was still married to Donna Hanover. During that time, Donna accused Giuliani of serial adultery, alleging that Judi was just the latest in a string of mistresses, following a rumored affair that he mayor had with his former communications director, Cristyne Lategano.
So no one is perfect…of course. Just take a quick peak the Democrat ticket and their voting record. But when selecting the next President of the United States, we have to consider a multitude of other issues when we make our decision (illegal immigration, healthcare, social security, economy, foreign policy, Iraq, education, etc.) It comes down to what is important to you, the voter. And, it’s very possible that we may have a President that scores an F on the morality scale, yet takes no shit at all from Islamic fundamentalists or the mainstream media. One that just gets the job done without worrying about the insane ramblings of Pelosi or Kennedy.
For me, the number one topic of concern is national security. I am voting for the candidate that I feel will keep the United States most safe from terrorism, both domestic and foreign. Without secure borders and an aggressive pro-active approach to terrorism, all the crap that liberals bitch and complain about will mean nothing. We will have to live our lives like our good friends in Israel, preparing daily for suicide bombers and then burying our children. This is not a risk I am willing to take.
In a world where this is reality for many, how can anything be more important?
