Barack Obama is not my Homey

The Cult of Barack Obama

The media is in love with him. His cult-like followers are cheering, crying, fainting and passing out, similar to that of Scientology rally that I once attended. You can call it the Barack Obama tent-gathering revival meeting that were once common among Evangelical Christians in the U.S. over a century ago. Here’s a quick video:

While the sequence of cult-like behavior has impressed the mainstream media, I am not that impressed.  It reminds me of charismatic and inspiring cult-leader Jim Jones who, in the 70’s, led his sheep to South America where over 900 died by cyanide poisoning or gunshot wounds. Like Obama, Jim had the ability captivate crowds of people with his charming personality and great articulation of words. Here is some footage of the People’s Temple before the massacre (three and four minute mark); same crying, passing out, etc.

However, behind the passionate speeches about change and unity is a very scary story.  I looked up his voting record and was surprised to see that he doesn’t really have one. Over 300 bills have crossed his desk since 2005 and he only voted in about 50 percent of them. However, here are some key votes that he did vote on:

  • Voted against extending the Bush tax cuts on capital gains and dividends
  • Voted against permanently repealing the Death Tax. (Called the cuts a “Paris Hilton” tax break for “billionaire heirs and heiresses”)
  • Voted against CAFTA
  • Voted YES on raising the minimum wage to $7.25 rather than $6.25.
  • Opposed the lifting of $0.54 per gallon tariff on cheaper Brazillian ethanol. Said, “ethanol imports are neither necessary nor a practical response to current gasoline prices.”
  • Voted against the bankruptcy abuse bill.
  • Opposes privatizing Social Security
  • Voted against drilling in ANWR.
  • Voted against confirmation of Sam Alito and John Roberts to the Supreme Court.
  • Voted against extending the Partiot Act’s wiretap provision.
  • Opposed any bans on partial birth abortions.

To be fair, I don’t think Obama is a bad man. He seems like a very decent human being; a good father and husband. I’d even consider having a beer with him someday.  But he is not someone I would want making decisions for this country on my behalf.

  1. That looks like an excellent voting record to me. Thank you for consolodating that info.

  2. I agree. I like that voting record. Go Obama!

  3. He's not my homey either! And MGB and Dale...you guys are insane. Yeah, go Obama....let's go kill some more babies when their mom's are 8 1/2 months prego.

  4. I am unphased by your biased description of his "followers" and unimpressed by comparing him to Jim Jones. I feel like you used those two arguments to create an effect not well grounded in a premise. As far as the voting record I am neither enthused or shocked to see it. As always I agree with some and disagree with others but overall my opinion remains the same.

Of course, my opinion is biased and my goal in life isn't to impress the likes of you! Thanks for stopping by though.

  6. I admire Barak Obama as a public speaker, and rhetorician. He has genuine talents for communication.

Comparing him to Jim Jones is not, I think, the wisest choice in this post. Particularly since you later say, "I don’t think Obama is a bad man." That sort of internal inconsistency does nothing to correct the (inaccurate) stereotype of conservatives as unintelligent, emotion-driven, and irrational. Not that you are, of course: I'm thinking of image here.

Finally, kudos for bringing up Obama's voting record.

This is a legitimate topic of discussion in the campaign: unlike rather wild assertions that Obama is a sort of Islamic fifth columnist. (His father's an apostate Muslim - that doesn't mean that Mr. Obama is an Islamic terrorist).

Obama's voting record is one of the reasons that I'm very unlikely to vote for him in the election. One of his apologists said that, as a very junior congressman, he had to vote the way his party told him to: I'm not convinced.

  7. @ Norski

I'm not comparing his character/ideology to that of Jim Jones. I am simply saying that his followers are cultic in nature and like Jim Jones, he is passionate, charismatic and a very good communicator. Perhaps a deceiver as well.

  8. Loved this article...thanks for bringing up Obama's record. I was looking all over for it. :-) I'm absolutely shocked! This man professes to "care" about college students, like myself, but he's NEVER voted for an amendment to help us with our financial aid. He's such a LIAR! I'm definitely not voting for him now. And, I will show my fellow classmates how this man has failed us and how we're just being tricked to vote for him.

  9. I've made the comparison to the Jim Jones cult mentality as well. As an aside, Jim Jones didn't start out as a 'bad person'. He was certainly misguided and his actions and beliefs resulted in a terrible evil. The point is, his followers followed him without question. They believed him to be what they wanted him to be rather than what he was. That's where the comparison to the cult-like nature of the followers of Obama comes in, imo.

    Thank you for your comments.

    @ Beth

You are correct about Jim Jones. He was actually a very likable, nice man before he went pshcyo.

    Thank you for visiting.

  11. Finally an article that shows the creepiness involved in Obama's campaign.

We all remember the media frenzy over the hysterical Sanjiya fans on American Idol. Obabma's followers have the same craze going and media is totally cool with it. Except no people aren't buying in to crappy music, they're buying in to some skewed politics.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, Obama is the kind of guy who convinces you something like genocide is cool and trendy. Sound familiar?

    March 8th, 2008 5:52 am Natalie
  12. Yes, Obama's followers are cult-like. This man is dangerous.

  13. "I've said it once and I'll say it again, Obama is the kind of guy who convinces you something like genocide is cool and trendy. Sound familiar?"

Yeah, but I never thought George Bush was that great a speaker.

  15. Thanks for this article. I've been thinking he's a weirdo but the fact that you showed his voting record confirms it in actual facts.

I didn't know about votesmart.org until now. Thanks for the info.

  16. The fact that he is inexperienced and extreme liberal should keep any rational person from siding with him.

But we all know that, generally, libs are not rational.

As soon as the Obama messiah gets his wings clipped and is seen as just another politician, the fainting and cool-aid drinking will surely stop.

    March 8th, 2008 10:16 am Zachary
  17. Jim Jones? Are you serious? This guy is on a different level. You can't even conceptualize what it is Barack Obama is bringing to the table. Before 1996, if I told you there would be a new-comer to golf who was young and black and would change the way golf is perceived and played and he would go on to break every known record in this ancient sport what would you have said? Would you have compared him to a cult leader? You are scared. Things like dirty tricks, false rumors, attack ads and the rest of the old school political playbook don't apply here. Hillary already knows it and McCain will soon to come to know it. People are excited and energized and they are voting and contributing in record numbers. His voting record is in line with his party just like every other politician. When you you try to break free (like McCain tried to do) you're vilified from both sides. To remain viable you get in line (like McCain had to do and is still struggling with even as the nominee). Your weak attempt to somehow attack Obama with his voting record is the same old, lame old tactics that don't lay a glove on the man....but you'll find that out yourself soon enough.

  18. simonesdad2008,

I still believe that Barack will most probably win this election. That is not what I want but it is the most likely outcome.

My problem with him is he is being painted as the "great moderater" to "bring people together" yet out of the entire US Senate he is the MOST liberal. Not anywhere in the middle; he is number one on one end. He is not an average middle of the road uniting politician.

He is also a politician. His cult is trying to put him above the politics. He is a mediocre politician at best, not a good debator, a good speaker.

    March 8th, 2008 4:03 pm Zachary
  19. Zachary,

You guys (conservatives) have done a great job of making the tag "liberal" a bad word. Then you add the qualifier MOST to it and Barack becomes some type hippie. The truth is all of these labels are relative. Barry Goldwater is spinning in his grave because of what passes as conservative these days. Now McCain has "court" so-called conservatives in his own party. In my opinion the labels don't mean anything in the abstract. You don't know how you feel about abortion until a loved one is raped and is pregnant. You don't know how you feel about gay marriage unless you are gay yourself because if you are not, it has zero impact in your life. I'm liberal about some things and more conservative about others. I suspect most people fall into that way of thinking as well. You conservatives like to tell people who they can marry, who they can have sex with, which religion is the "right" one to follow. I get you on the tax thing but cuts should be even and fair. You guys like to go after poor people for some reason. I never understood that.

    March 8th, 2008 4:31 pm simonesdad2008
  20. Simonesdad has a point that conservatives should consider when bandying about the "liberal" epithet. Zachary says Obama has the most liberal voting record, but doesn't seem to realize that the scale only goes from 1 to 5 out of 10 points.

It's not like there are any bills being put forward to nationalize the oil industry or to sing the praises of Karl Marx. These are the kind of bills that would rate a 10 on the most liberal scale (at least in the minds of conservatives).

But in the US, our entire political spectrum pretty much ends in the middle, so it only makes sense that someone on the far left is a moderate.

    March 8th, 2008 4:51 pm Dale
  21. @ simonesdad2008

Yes, you are correct my friend. Liberal is a very naughty word and it's destroying my beloved country. Look around you at our society. It's falling a part, fast! And, when I say liberal, I am not referring to you. I am referring to the ultra left crowd like Code Pink, George Soros, Moveon.org, etc. The reality is that we need to have people with different beliefs to balance out this country. Besides, if we were all conservative, who in the heck else would I poke fun at in this blog?

Btw - look out for my post "Liberal Minded, You've Been Blinded" later this weekend. I explain in full detail what being liberal minded really means. I am sure it'll piss you off and many others too! LOL.

    good day.

  22. as a young(ish) (i'm not sure if under 30 qualifies as young these days) black--well at least as black as obama--conservative , i would have to say that obamamania is the most disturbing thing since the minisodes involving procuring hannah montana concert tickets. not only has this young man with an inept staff managed to show his/their utter lack of abiltiy to articulate effectively to foreign governments and press in the past week, but I hope his fraudulent nature has been exposed to some of those left in the places that matter--namely philadelphia. the man of hope who practices new politics clearly employs and surrounds himself with people who practice old school politics behind the scenes. anyone who falls for this is on the level of jim jones kool aid drinkers.

moreover, yes b. hussein obama is the most liberal member of the senate. not even teddy or hillary would support depriving the LIVING babies of BOTCHED late term abortions the medical care necessary to survive. once his real positions, or lack thereof, are once and all revealed the novelty will wear off.

  24. Obama is just like the rest of the liberals--They want to have their cake and eat it too. That is, they think that there is some magical way to achieve total fairness and equality among all citizens without any of the negative consequences. It is unfortunate that so many Americans are blind to the fact that Democratic policies are so strikingly similar to socialist/communist policies. They support a system of government that simply does not work. The quality of life we all enjoy is the direct result of a free-market economy and limited government. There would be, however, one advantage to Obama being elected, the country might wake up and realize the danger a Democratic government poses to our wallets and comfortable lifestyles.

  25. I would complain that Obama is too conservative. Look at his top advisors on economics: Cutler is the only one that is arguably progressive. Although he supports Big Health Industry as an economic engine, I guess that's better than the War Machine. Goolsbee is a 'Skull and Bones' Yalee - enough said. Liebman is for privatization of Social Security. Any volunteers to send me airfare to Venezuela?

  26. I have noticed that the media has not picked up on the dis-respectful side of Obama. While, in his speeches, he will sometimes refer to Hillary as Senator Clinton he always refers to our president as George Bush and not President Bush and to his colleague in the Senate simply as John McCain.

Conversely, when he was questioned in a recent TV debate by Tim Russert as to his relationship with Louis Farrakhan, Obama very reverently referred to him as Minister Farrakhan like the members of the Nation of Islam do.

  28. Thanks for the voting record info. Here's more Obama facts from www.votestrike.com

    EARMARKS:

Obama joined with other lawmakers last year to obtain almost $100 million worth of earmarks for Illinois. Clinton worked with others to win $342 million in pet projects for New York

    CAMPAIGN FUNDING:

Obama, who last year promised to also accept public money in the general election if his GOP opponent did so, has since hedged on that vow.

Public financing: Obama replied "yes" in September 2007 when asked if he would agree to public financing of the presidential election if his GOP opponent did the same. Obama has now attached several conditions to such an agreement, including regulating spending by outside groups. His spokesman says the candidate never committed himself on the matter.

ACCORDING TO HIS OWN FEC (FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION) FILINGS HIS CAMPAIGN HAS RECIEVED MONEY FROM:

Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Capital One, Bank of Montreal, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, Butterfield Bank, Resource Bank, Bain Capital, Mutual of America, Telemundo, La Pietra, Sankatt Investments, Transamerica Investment Mgmt., US Venture Partners, Sony Pictures, Warner Music Group, IBM, Lehman Bros., AT&T, Ticketmaster, Alantos Pharmaceuticals, 20th Century Fox, Aragon Global, UCLA Medical Center, AHMC Healthcare Inc., AV International, Fidelity Ventures, Clifford Law Firm, CCMP Capital, Cypruss Funds Investment Mgmt., Kaman Group, Solimar Ventures, Comcast, Sterne Assets, Citilink Investment Corp., Third Security, COSTCO, Sun Capitol Partners, Tudor Investment, Madison Investment, EMC Capital Mgmt., Bel Air Investment, Mirel Capital, Grandhara Capital, Lehman Bros., GB Capital, Citadel Investments, etc.
