As Conservatives, can we really support McCain?

March 25th, 2008 Urban Conservative

I want to start off by telling everyone how happy I am to be talking to a new audience. I have been blogging on myspace for a couple years now with a pretty good following, but nothing compares when you can branch off into that new arena, where people may have never heard of you before. Before I get started on this topic, which I am sure everyone has on their minds since John McCain became the Republican nominee, I want to tell you a little about me.

I am just a small town boy from outside Pittsburgh, PA. I am a college student studying History and Journalism, with one more year to complete. I plan on attending Law School when I am done. I have thought many hours about which one I would like to attend, but still have not come up with a good answer. I am also an author. My first book, YOUNG CONSERVATIVE: VIEWS OF A COLLEGE CONSERVATIVE was published back in January of this year and has really been a better seller than I had ever hoped it would be. People are starting to realize there are young people like my self out there, with a good head on their shoulders and want to pass on the Conservative values so they never die out. This is why I write. This is why I do what I do. I do not write like Mr. Hannity or anyone else. I try to keep it simple yet fun to read. I never go to a publisher unless I can read through the book and not put myself to sleep. I plan on being a face that people will recognize in the years to come when it comes to politics, and I will be a name that comes up in conversation when it comes to young Conservatism in this country. But for right now, let us stay on track and talk about our nominee for the Presidency.

John MCain is a person that I never thought I would ever have to support for this office. he was always so far to the center, I never in a million years thought that the Republican people of this country would ever elect him as the nominee. So, writing this piece comes as a shock to me. There are many issues where I just flat out disagree with John McCain, and I believe he knows that many Conservative Republicans out there are just like me. I believe he knows that he must win us over so we do not stay home and hand this election over to the Democrats, who are in more trouble than ever right now. John McCain is our nominee, but should we even support his run at all?

Of course we should! If and when you read my book, you will see real Conservative principles outlined for the way this country needs to be run in the future. You will also see that I have a very open mind, and that I suppose leads me to support a man like John McCain. He is the most qualified to do this job at this moment in time, and the Democratic challengers do not even come close to where McCain is when it comes to experience. I hate to make this sound like I am chosing the lesser of three evils here, because I am not. I could choose, like many Americans have threatened, to just stay at home in November and make a statement. This country needs more than a John McCain right now, but with the right people behind him, I am confident he will make a very upstanding President, one that we will be able to be proud of.

I know some of you are asking yourselves how could we support a man that teamed up with Ted Kennedy to sail this nation down the river? That question ran through my mind all day as I thought of what to write for this piece. We all have to be confident that this man, a war veteran that was willing to give his life, a man with nothing but good things to say about when it comes to working problems out, will do the right thing when the American people stand up and speak their minds. He has promised us that he will close the border before doing anything else with the issue of the illegals that are here now, and even though that is not reasuring, it is something that we can build on as a nation. If McCain will not push for Amnesty when he is elected, but instead will actually close the border like we have been promised for the past so many years, he will have done more for the problem than any other of our Presidents had done in the past. Obviously, it is not ALL up to him, but he will have the final say when the next Amnesty bill is put in front of him. he will have to veto it, or lose the support of the people who are beleiving in him right now!

Plato once wrote “Democracy… is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder; and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike.” This form of government that we hold so dear to us is not without its problems, but yet it is the best government in the world. No, we do not agree with John McCain 100% of the time, as we never agree with anyone 100% of the time. This “charming” form of government that Plato writes about does not come along without its problems and without disagreement. This country was founded by men who did not agree on everything at the same time. BUT, they did agree on one thing, and that was they deserved to be a free nation. Today, we look at John McCain and we say that we do not agree with everything he has to say, but when it comes to the War on Terror and the War in Iraq, we know he is right on the money. I would rather have McCain in the White House protecting our freedoms than Hillary or Obama giving them away for peace that cannot be secured. We are in troubled time in this country and throughout the world, and we need a man who has the guts to stand up against tyrants who will not back down. And for that reason, we all should stand behind John McCain and give him our full support.

I leave you with another quote from Plato, which I want you all to think about before you read my next piece. Plato says “Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.” Pick the man who will keep that Liberty, even for only one more day!

"Take back America" ...you are a little late poor, dear Petunia.
Air America, Randi Rhodes, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, Rachael Maddow, and the rest of us progressives already have this slogan.  We have had it for nearly eight years.  But, keep on plugging, Petunia.  While you are doing this, you should sit yourself in front of the breakdown of how the vote went and just who voted for whom and why.
I feel sorry for the ultra conservatives that cannot understand that the majority of the country has spoken. It was in all the papers.  A clear mandate for a halt to the direction this country has taken during this Presidency - a direction that you, Petunia- still wish to go.
  • Hey Petunia, good to hear from y'a!

"There is a "new conservatism" brewing and the left is PETRIFIED.... that's why Palin was such a threat and they attacked her with everything in them."

The threat from Gov. Palin as i saw it was exactly the reason so many republicans (like Colin Powell, Scott McClellan, David Frum.........it's a long list, you'd have to agree )
-endorsed Obama over McCain.........i hesitate to put it this way, but the simple truth is........She's ignorant.  It was clear from the first interview with Couric.  The woman may be a lot of things, but presidential material she is NOT!
  • petunia
I believe you are right - There is a "new conservatism" brewing and the left is PETRIFIED.... that's why Palin was such a threat and they attacked her with everything in them.  They are STILL attacking her.  I don't believe anyone "anonymously" from her group told the press anything....they made it up ***the bunch of liars***
I am already starting the slogan for 2012 "TAKE BACK AMERICA"....buttons, shirts and signs.....
The new face of conservatism will have to be young, strong and smart (like we already are) but also head strong and loud - like the idiotic democrats spewing their lies and hatred and left wing crap......but I digress....
One of two things will happen here:
1.The ruins that the big O will leave behind, after his stupid ideas don't work, will leave his "followers" disenchanted and easily swayed (like with Carter)--- a sure win for the RIGHT (taken both ways)
    or
    2. The Bush policies that have been working to improve the country will be held on to - with much backpedaling on O's part (and no recognition from the liberal media)- and the country, in four years, will be recovering, unemployment lower, housing crises gone, stock market, on the rise, etc... and O will get the credit....(like with Clinton) arg. ----this will be a MUCH harder win....
I don't know which one to hope for........
The RIGHT is called that for a reason - :)

Rev. Wright to Speak at NAACP Dinner

    Wednesday, April 23, 2008 9:03 AM

By: Ronald Kessler Article Font Size

The Detroit chapter of the NAACP is featuring Barack Obama’s longtime minister, Jeremiah Wright, as keynote speaker at its annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.

The event this Sunday is billed as the largest annual sit-down dinner of African Americans in the country. At least 10,000 people are expected to hear the Rev. Wright speak.

The question is, Why would anyone want to hear Wright make his trademark denunciations of America as an oppressor of blacks and a creator of the AIDS virus to kill them off?

“When you take the t-e-x-t out of context, you’re left with c-o-n, and we have been conned,” Detroit branch NAACP President Wendell Anthony explained as he announced the dinner’s speaker at a news conference.

Defenders of the Rev. Wright apparently think Americans are fools because they can’t be relied upon to understand what Wright is saying. When Wright shouts, “Goddamn America,” the context is clear as a bell.

Louis Farrakhan, who received a lifetime achievement award from Wright’s church in December and whom Wright praised for his “integrity and honesty,” uses the same bogus claim that his words are being quoted out of context as he makes hate-filled comments against America, whites, Jews, and homosexuals.

If this invitation from an organization dedicated to stamping out “racial hatred” is shocking, it is far less so than the fact that a man who has described Wright as a friend, mentor, and sounding board has a good shot at becoming president.

In the same vein as his association over two decades with Wright, Obama has had a “friendly” relationship with William Ayers, who has said he wishes he and the Weather Underground, of which he was a member, had done more than bomb the Pentagon, Capitol, State Department, and police stations.

“I don’t regret setting bombs," Ayers told The New York Times in a story that ironically ran on Sept. 11, 2001. “I feel we didn’t do enough.” For good measure, Ayers added that he would not discount the possibility he would do it again.

Defending his relationship with Ayers, which has included help when he first ran for the Illinois Senate, Obama said in the recent Democratic debate that he is also friendly with Rep. Tom Coburn. Obama described the Oklahoma Republican as favoring the death penalty for those who carry out abortions.

“Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn’s statements?” Obama asked. “Because certainly I don’t agree with those either.”

Radical as Coburn’s position may be, he was proposing legislation to be passed by Congress. That is quite different from Ayers’s admission that he bombed innocent people in violation of criminal law.

Instead of finding ways to excuse them, Obama should be denouncing both Wright and Ayers. Obama’s problem is that he does not know right from wrong.

    OhHolyKnight,
It is nice to hear from a person of faith who is not blinded by the false prophets out there like Haggee and who is that Guy from focus on the family, Dobson? another nut job. While in College, my wife sold an Oriental rug to Pat Robertson's wife - she never paid - wouldn't answer the buzzer at the gate of their fabulous mansion when we drove up. They are the worst Hypocrites of all shoving there religion down everyone's throats.

    Petunia,
I'm a pollworker in Florida so I saw it happen. It was pure crap. That witch Katherine Harris is the biggest snob around. She's such a piece of crap that even though she gave the election to Bush in 2000 they wouldn't have anything to do with her because she is a Loon. When fatso Jeb Bush threw her off the back of the boat she ran for state office and tried to steal that election too. If you had your right to vote arbitrarily denied you would be just as P.O.d. The fact that you think it is funny really indicates just what kind of a biased moron you are. The focus of Republican vote reform - fraudulent voting - is so full of it and hypocritical that it blows my mind. You all make it sound like there are armies of people running around from precinct to precinct voting multiple times. That is the height of ridiculousness. The people you are targeting have all they can do to get to one polling place, stand in line forever, because there aren't enough machines, read through all the crazy amendmant questions that the Republican controlled Fl. State legislature puts on the ballot just to gum things up (3 citizen initiatives, and 11 from the politicians in 2004), and then run to the next polling place so they can do it all again. Its down right voter suppression, and if it happened to you you wouldn't think it was funny at all.

First of all, I'd like to say that I'm happy to finally hear a conservative supporting McCain, because, while I'm not sure who I support yet, many republicans are bashing McCain simply because he is moderate.

Also, I'd like to tell petunia that, hi, it's me again. And you're still as ignorant as you were on the other blogs. ; )

    Arturo,
I agree completely. The state of American global and internal affairs is frighteningly similar to WWII Nazism. In fact, the Bush administration has turned the military and our country into the NEXT ROUND OF NAZIS. And the conservatives of the country are supporting it more vigorously than ever.

To quote Padme Amidala, from Star Wars, on the "Republic"-turned-fascist empire: "So this is how democracy dies... with thunderous applause." Republicans are so damn stubborn and reluctant to admit that the president they put into the office was an embarrassment that they have to support him and everything he does. Which leads us to round 2 of Nazism. Sweet.
  • Are you still crying about the stealing votes thing? that cracks me up too - you dems are funny people.

    Davidwalters.....
the one million Vietnamese translates into 320 or so 9/11s difference being was they had a chance to get used to it.....I guess. I heard two more good ones on air America the other day.

McCain - President? It'll be interesting to have one of the signers of the Declaration of Indepenence as President.

McCain - President? First open casket Innauguration!

My "Fox news girl" Co-worker even laughed at that one.

Which States do you think they're going steal votes in this time?
  • Arturo....
"......I say it again for clarity 1,000,000 people via aerial bombardments to try and convince those who happened to make it, to quit. Didn't work did it."
For the bomb manufactures it may have been profitable.
For the rest of us, no.

I'm stunned! a conservative blogspot with actual dialog. Most that I've looked at clean out opposition commentary. Ummm censorship I believe, yes?

Nazis - When I was a kid the nazis trotted out in movies, T.V. shows, etc. were despicable because they were - well just plain unfair. They tortured prisoners, Killed people randomly to make examples, employed a feared secret police that could whisk you away, no questions asked, never to be heard from again, But most importantly believed that they were SUPERIOR, all other people in the world in their eyes were subhuman. So whats the connection to you conservatives out there? Torture? well that's pretty obvious; you are cowards because you think it's OK to torture people when there is some kind of iniment threat out there. Here is a clue for you. We are Americans; We are not cowards; (like Mr. Texas air natonal guard)We do not torture people because it is just plain wrong!; because it doesn't work! and most importantly it violates our most important national identity which is a superior creed of JUSTICE! So when conservatives say its OK to torture I, perceive it as an act of cowardice.

The random killing our nation sadly employs has a longer history, During WW II we did lots of that; yes? The purpose was arguably strategic, and I believe it is where our national identity began to slip. We blew the crap out of two cities in Japan. Which did save thousands of American lives and brought the most horrific period of worldwide violence to an end. Great!; But the genie out of the bottle result was 20 years later in Vietnam our military leaders had no compunction about killing ONE MILLION should I say it again for clarity 1,000,000 people via aerial bombardments to try and convince those who happened to make it, to quit. Didn't work did it. On the civil level there is also the matter of capitol punishment. One of the old standards of course is that capitol punishment is a deterrant. The murder rate in the United States is clearly tied to only one indicator. The economy Stupid, whether we've had capitol punishment or not we still go out murdering just about the same amount. Because the one has nothing to do with the other, people about to commit a crime of passion aren't sitting there thinking "Hmmm maybe I shouldn't blow my cheatin' (wife, husband, neighbor, boss, school bully, etc.) away "cause I might get the chair. Right? So what's left, an eye for an eye?
YOU CULTURE OF LIFE CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!
Did you miss the part of the Bible that says Thou shalt not kill?, Turn the other cheek? God is the ultimate judge? Your culture of life seems to extend to unborn fetuses only! after that all bets are off. Don't even get me started on the gun thing.

Secret Police - Can you say Guantanamo? (tip of the iceberg I'm afraid) Are you righties so afraid of the the "Islamofascists" (not a real word!) that you are willing to jail innocent men indefinitely, without legal counsel, to be subject to torture. (hey just like the Nazis) on the chance that one of them may be plotting to blow something up with an "orange jumpsuit bomb" You are gutless cowards who ARE willing to sacrifice liberty for security. You are worried about another attack on innocent americans and thus willing to toss all that we hold dear away so that you personally don't get hurt. WWWAAAAHHHHH!!!!! Don't hurt me mister mean old islamobomber. I surrender, I'll talk, just don't don't hurt MMMMMMEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! WWWAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!! O yeah your the tough old party of strong national defense, security, the tough guys, like good ole boy Texas air national guard Bush, and seven deferments Cheney, Look up the rest of your parties leader's military records. CHICKENSH*TS!!! Ya know when they were tacking Jesus up on the cross he could have said no, could have smote them all with a wave of his... well maybe with a wink and a nod, but he didn't did he. HE DIDN"T BECAUSE HE FEARED NOONE BUT GOD ALONE! So are you righties really afraid of GOD ONLY? or are you afraid of getting squished by a bus on the turnpike? no Are you afraid of getting nailed by a chunk of sattelite falling out of the sky, eaten by a shark, falling off a ladder in your backyard, getting zapped while messin' around in the fusebox, falling out of the back of your boat while taking a leak and drowning, Smacking into the overpass while fumbling around in your crotch for that dropped butt, or that chicken Mc nugget that fell on the passenger side floor, No your not I don't hear squat about fear of those things from POX news(not really news is it!). Instead I hear about Anthrax, and killer african (scuse me Africanized!) bees, deadly lettuce, Commies (Yikes!), and suicide (sorry) homicide bombers. Willing to let the TSA feel you up because you might have some plastique in your bra (the exploding kind) YOU MAKE ME SICK!!!!!

And finally you are Nazis because the large measure of your commentary is the denigration of Liberals, Occasionally you talk about Fiscal restraint HUH?? and small government WHAT!!!, and the free market TELL ME WHATS FREE ABOUT BERNANKE GIVING THIRTY THOUSAND BEHR STEARNS INVESTORS ONE MILLION BUCKS A PIECE!!!!!!! while you blind stooopid anti selfinterested right wing voters shuffle off to Smellmart to buy some crap from china with your whopping six hundred bucks! KEEEERIIIST are you blind! (I digress) and you get a little more excited about abortion, Hey I know lets stick the mothers in jail they're the ones committing the crime! and guns GUNS? guns aren't the problem........Gun-nuts are! oh and of course the ready access to deadly devices that require less municipal inqiury(that happily for all disappears after 24 hours!) than it does to get a DOG LICENSE!!!!
Those are your big issues but what you really like is calling us liberals names, PINKO,COMMIE, FEMINAZI, QUEERLOVERS, FUZZYHEADED, (Huh?) WHINERS, BROTHA LOVERS(oh no thats not racist!) CUT AND RUN (yeah like Georgie boy running off to Alabama) Oh forget it. You know the list goes on and the substance of all your discourse is the same pablum being spewed by your hypocritical heroes like Rushbo or what ever you call him(gimmee some more oxycontin puuuhleeze!) Oh forget it. You won't read this anyway. If you didn't stop at the word nazis above then you have a secret selfhatred that forced you to read the rest of the way to here sputtering and fuming all the way. Heres some bumpersticker stuff for your lightweight brain to get steamed about.

Norski, what you're doing is dancing around the main point. so i said "empire" instead of "nation", we're no politicians, and freudian slips happen :)

the point is we have a significant army presense in the middle east. i won't generalise all republicans, but it feels like most of them(especially the young ones) think war is free. we send our troops over, they whoop some ass, they come home and all is well.. maybe that would work if we were fighting a nation, or a person, but we are fighting a religion! and its impossible to tell what percentage of arabs believe in this 'jihad'. there are no perimeters, no habeus corpus, no end-game short of Al-queda disappearing off the face of the planet.
  • Yes, it's supposed to be the 21st Century
....and there are many people being paid top $$ just to add a few words to add to a box or package, so it can be sold.
Americans hate to loose wars or to be referred to as bullies(or imperialists).
Was it Gen. Smedley Butler who claimed he fought not for the beloved "Corps" but for Brooks Brothers&United Fruit Company? Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Imperialistic? America? surely not in the 21st century. No, we are out to bring freedom to those poor middle easterners, right?
  • "the problem is sustaining our empire with our army across seas, throwing billions of dollars into nothing. now our economy is heading downward.. noone thinks the war is effecting this at all?"

    ??

The last I checked, there is no American Empire: outside the fevered imaginations of people who still believe United Nations speeches containing phrases like "imperialistic, capitalistic, warmonger running dogs."

America does not have an empire, unless dominating much of the world's economic, intellectual, and creative life counts as an "empire," and has not acted "imperialistically" for over a hundred years.

I will agree that nineteenth century America did acquire territory in a way that could reasonably be called "imperialistic." And I doubt that I will ever be comfortable with the disgraceful way that Hawaii was made a territory.

However, this is the twenty first century.

It's as reasonable to think of today's America as having an empire, or being imperialistic, as it is to view Norway as a Viking base of operations.
  • Warz
who doesn't "understand the nature of the threat from Islamofascism"?

unless you've been living under a rock for the past 7 yrs.

the problem is sustaining our empire with our army across seas, throwing billions of dollars into nothing. now our economy is heading downward.. noone thinks the war is effecting this at all?

would you say its worth it, medling in the middle east at the expense of our great nation?

I'm no war mongerer, yet i admit there is a threat from arabs with convictions. I believe Afghanistan is worth fighting for, and i believe there are terrorists all through the area... except for iraq. we had no right to go in, and now after we done screwed Iraq up, the terrorists arrive.

open a damn history book, the occupier is always beaten by the occupants. remember your founding fathers who used the same damn tactics Al-queda is using against us today. ive got a plan, why dont we leave Iraq, let the terrorists take it over, then swoop back in and take them out Hussein-style.
  • -McCain-Feingold to destroy free political speech.

-McCain-Kennedy to open the illegal immigration floodgates.

-McCain-Leiberman to create a government-industrial regulatory body that would make Mussolini blush

-Gang of 13 instead of standing up for the Constitutional option to require an up or down vote on federal judges.

-In favor of closing Guantanamo (and doing what with the dangerous people there, who knows?)

-In favor of disallowing waterboarding in all circumstances, even the ticking time-bomb scenario.

And that is just the last few years...

  • I think a better question and one that certainly takes precedence in my mind over "As conservatives, can we really support McCain"? is "As conservatives, can we really NOT support McCain"... I think despite the fact that McCain is not neccessarily an ideal conservative candidate, you really have to look at the alternatives. If the conservative base does not support McCain, then surely Obama or Clinton will win the presidency. Even though the conservative base can say McCain wasn't conservative enough to support... as a conservative I feel like we need to put our pride aside. We need to choose to take the higher ground and pick a candidate which we feel woudl be a better candidate for America and put politics aside for a change.

  • Norski.....
Thanx for expanding on the military industrial complex thing. Few people understand that concept and it's context......Eisenhower watched as this thing took off, if any man in the mid 20th century understood the implications, it was he.
I distrust......not so much the politician, but the influence that pays for the politician.
I don't know much, but there seems there has gotta be a way to have a country that can prosper without resorting to exploitation.
  • Lori
    Norski

You are right that is an over generalization. I am just so disappointed and the truth is they do all lie and say whatever to get elected and I just long for someone who is truly honest but that would take someone just off the street and that isn't going to happen. So I do apologize for putting them all in one group but our politicians do kinda live in bubbles and really are out of touch with the ordinary person and that is really sad.
  • See.....i told you guys i was a real hippie! This is a real LOVE FEST!
My "man" just got busted last week..........i haven't burned in over a week! F**K! So forgive me if i too, get all........::snif,snif:: ..emotional. lol!
Anyway, while we're at it, lets Thank UC......i came here to spew hate against him BECAUSE he was conservative, and along the way i saw my own failings......i was stereotyping.
Me? Racist? i am sure; in my past, there was racist thinking that colored my perspective in a very nazi way(My mom is from Germany, she was in the Hitler youth), i remember the white-only sign over the water fountain at Sears and as a youth, and tried to rationalize that.....and it all made sense(white supremacy) until Dr. King was murdered.
Yet, even after that day in Memphis, my ignorance of how it might be different for a black person living in my city was still there. I was clueless until i found myself at the Durham rescue mission......that was one of my most important educational experiences ever....for me.
  • Lori,

    Well-written position statement.

It's a complicated world we live in: and that comes through in what you wrote.

One thing: "As for the presidential candidates, they are all corrupt and just plain evil."

I think you know about the idea of "original sin," so in that sense I can agree with your statement. However, little as I am enthused about any of the major candidates, I'd be hesitant to say that.

Of course, they promise things that are outside the range of competence for the presidency, as defined by the constitution. It's a sort of cultural assumption that candidates promise things they can't deliver on.

And, in fact, for all my life, the federal government has been acting in ways not defined by the constitution. The constitution, as written, defines the House of Representatives and Senate as the legislative bodies. For major policy decisions, the Supreme Court has been the legislative body for decades: by (over-) using their assumed ability to see meanings and rights in the Constitution that ordinary people can't.

However, saying that a group of people is "all corrupt and just plain evil" is, I think, an over-generalization.

Best wishes, and may you grow and prosper.
  • Lori
I am not here to bash anyone. I just wanted to express a few things. In the last couple of years I have been becoming more interested in what is going on in the world and in politics. As a child my parents were democrat and in my child's understanding I would hear things like democrats are for the people. Well when I got older my parents became Republicans. So I decided to learn all I could to really decide what I believed in.

I went back to the founding fathers to really understand our system and what they wanted from it. I have learned a lot about the constitution. We are a Repulic not just a democracy.

I wanted to learn about the differences conservative and liberal. I knew I must be conservative because well for one I am a Christian and I don't believe abortion is right. I learned that liberals believe in abortion and pretty much anything that in my eyes in immoral. But I wanted to know more. So I am learning about the politics of stuff. Repulicans believe in smaller government which is what our forefathers and our constitution states. (Although noted this administration and the republican congress forgot that one), they believe in smaller taxes and no matter what anyone says, I am not rich and I have benefitted from the Bush tax cuts. They believe in Individual freedom and free market economy. Of course the Republicans these days have lost their way and need to get back to it.

On the other hand, democrats seem to believe in the bigger the government the better. More regulations, more taxes, less individual freedom and government run everything. Socialism, Markism and even communism seem to be the ultimate goal.

I started doing a lot of reading and it has amazed me that liberals call conservatives racist, facist and nazi's. Now this amazed me and confused me because from everything I am learning the democrats are the ones who are racist and facist and nazi like. I am so confused about how republicans got this reputation. If you really check out what these names mean you may be surprised to find which party is more likely to accomplish these goals. As for the war monger, if you study History, Most of the wars were started by Democrats and not for reasons of being attacked.

If conservatives are called racist due to being against illegal immigrants, thats just crazy. I know in my case I have friends that are legal immigrants from Mexico. Great family, they work speak English and have become part of this country and I might add that they are also against illegal immigration. I know that might not be the norm but it is with them and they have good explanations for that.

As for Black people, I was confused as to why they are usually democrats. Democrats take away our freedoms and they want us to become dependent on the government and I would think black people would want their freedom more then anyone. Also Lincoln was a republican. So it was a surprise to me to learn that about the black people. I know lots of white people and most could care less what someone's race is, I do know that my liberal white friends are usually quite racist and the same with my black friends and the ones I know. Usually it works the conservative ones are not the least bit racist but the liberal ones were.

So I was confused when I learned that liberals accuse conservatives of all this stuff when in my research and life experience that is why I know I am not a liberal.

As for the presidential candidates, they are all corrupt and just plain evil. The president constitutionally is not suppose to do all this garbage they are promising. Our constitution is not about socialism or communism and that is right where we are headed.
  • davidwalters,

    More good points.

First, "duplicitous" is one of the words that make me glad to have spellcheckers. And yes, it's spelled correctly. :)

As for me being an English teacher, that's "recovering English teacher." If I wanted to be, I could be as bitter about my experiences in the alleged educational system of America, as you appear to be about your military experience. I know: it's not the same kind of experience.

Second, I'm glad that you clarified your views in your recent comment.

One thing I'd like to clarify now.

"See guys......this is the kind of dialog we need, get rid of all these sappy misconceptions that lib's and progressives are code pink girls and republicans are fascists......"

Since the word "fascists" is there, it's possible that you're referring to a comment I made yesterday that read, in part,
    "First:
" 'Conservatism is a flawed ideaology [sic]. Conservatives are fascist, racist, nazi [sic] individuals.'

"Conservatives are also 'oppressive,' 'repressed' and 'repressive,' 'immature,' 'warmongers,' and quite a few other unsavory things. According to the self-described smarter set in academia, at least."

I hope that this wasn't seen as a claim that liberals, progressives, or any other group, are, in fact, fascists (or commies, for that matter). That would be one of those "sappy misconceptions," and there's too many of them as it is.

I don't like name-calling. When it's done by someone who opposes my views, it's annoying. When someone whose views are similar to mine indulges in it, it's disgusting and an embarrassment.

I've indulged in it myself - I'm human and fallible - but I try not to.
  • davidwalters,

Good point. The phrase, "military-industrial complex," is a quote - in context, too - of Dwight D. Eisenhower. He used it in his 'farewell address' as president, in 1961.

What's ironic is that, for more than a decade after that speech, "military industrial complex" was used freely, and with apparent ignorance of its origin, by acquaintances of mine who normally would soil their mouths with the words of aa (former) military man only to heap abuse on his head.

President Eisenhower was right: power and prestige, concentrated in a narrow segment of a society, is liable to abuse. Even non-military segments.

Now, because I can, here's that quote, its surrounding paragraphs, and a URL to a transcript.

("This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

"We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together." http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/document... )
  • ......Oh, and thanx for the prayer.......Dan!
And Norski.......i may be a progressive, but some of the things i loved about the army was:
    1) Shooting stuff
    2) Blowin' up stuff........now i don't do the later, but i still do the former
When they start coming over here(....after havin' really piss'd 'em off good)......i'll shoot the hell outta of 'em.
See guys......this is the kind of dialog we need, get rid of all these sappy misconceptions that lib's and progressives are code pink girls and republicans are fascists......
You see, 9-11 was tragic(excuse the understatement).......i in no way excuse the terrorists, but in the same way Rev. Wright does(Marine Corp Vet), i understand what motivated them. That doesn't make me wrong, but perceptive.
And i see the actions of this administration(.....and Sen Chuck Hagel agrees) as duplicitous (you're an english teacher...did i spell that right).........the question is why?
But, i'm a fair man(a true Libra if your into astrology).........give Bush&Co. a fair trial.
  • Wow!
Szabo....My view? Yes, i can give you my view.......i served my country, i've jumped out of many C-130's with silly-ass'd, gold-plated bullshit equipment(like M-49 dragon), just because some idiot talked congress into buying them. They were expensive pieces of SHIT......made(i may be wrong, so don't jump on me to badly...)by Boeing, or was it Hughes Aircraft.
.......and just how many Virginia Class subs to we need to hunt down Bin Laden? What....2.5 BILLION apiece? Is it cost effective? Hellnaw!
This is the military-industrial complex I know about........but don't take it from this old hippie........take it from the horses mouth(if he were alive)......you know that oldest of hippies, Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • @ Dan Szabo

    Well said my friend.
  • Oh, I almost forgot-

Excellent job, Shawn. Really well written piece.

  • To David and Becca-

Becca, well put dear. I could not have said it better myself.

David, I wish you America-haters, ironically led by a Presidential Candidate, would stop using that Blood for Oil, bullcrap. Where are the barges bringing all of this oil, that we are so desparately fighting over? I wish we were killing for oil, then I could get some of that .98/ gallon that I used to get before the, oh whats the pc way to say this, poor , mislead, muslim youth, crashed those planes on 9-11. Remember that? 9-11 ? Thats why we fight. Have you noticed that has not happened since?

Now, my very best friend, Becca refers to you and your people as brain-dead. Prove her wrong. Don't give us Barack Hussein Obama's view. Give us David's view.

God Bless You All, and David, I will certainly say a prayer for you-

  • About "Whose freedom did those 4,000 die for.......mine? yours?
Or KBR's freedom to make obscene profits?"

The 4,000 American soldiers whose deaths were dutifully tallied by traditional news media died serving their country: and protecting my freedom.

I realize that saying something like that brands me as one of those simple-minded people who don't realize that they are tools of the military-industrial complex and wage slaves of the capitalistic oppressor plutocrats.

But, I can live with that.

Yes, preventing al Qaeda from imposing Sharia law on America benefits the bloated oppressors of the proletariat. But it also makes it possible for me to wear trousers if I want to, and means that I won't be expected to beat my wife and kill my daughters (or is it the other way around?), if they do something un-Islamic: like drive a car.
  • Bryan....
i am pretty sure Sen. Clinton is as republican as Sen. McCain.
  • Of course we have to support John McCain. What is the alternative for Conservatives? Think Sen(s). Clinton or Obama will give you what you want?

In the end - the party is big - and much of what Conservatives want will ultimately be apart of how McCain governs when elected. I have confidence that McCain will be committed to fiscal conservatism, a strong national defense, lower taxes, and prosecute the war on terrorism. As a Presidential candidate - that's what matters the most to me... and I know from experience in government... policies are a long time changing... so you have to figure out what things the President can really affect. The budget, the national defense posture, and foreign policy are the easiest for the President to control - so I evaluated McCain based on those variables. I think as a conservative - who are you going to vote for on those variables? Will the Democrats raise or lower taxes (raise)? Will the Democrats prosecute the GWOT and Iraq? (No) Will they conduct a strong foreign policy? (Probably not).

Honestly - people like Ann Coulter are driving me insane? Support Sen. Clinton over the Republican Nominee?

To paraphrase Mr. Heston - from my cold, dead, vote machine pullin', hand...

  • War hero? Check out Vietnam Veterans against McCain for the real truth. http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com.... Why do you suppose he will not release his military records? What has a hero got to hide? He has publicly admitted that his economic knowledge is close to zero. He co-authored a bill that prohibits free speech. He wants to give amnesty to 35 million illegal aliens. He wants to keep our military in Iraq for a 100 years if need be.

Suppose none of the above was true or ever happened. McCain and the other nominees are fruits of the lowest rated congress in the history of our nation. With their rating you and I would never do business with people rated so lowly. Why would you give them the keys to the most powerful office in the world? Stop and think! When you do you will invariably say but there is no other choice. How wrong you would be.

Tom Millican an independent candidate from North Carolina will be the November surprise. Check him out at www.tommilican.com.

If you really want change then why do the same thing over and over by voting for one of the nominees from the mainstream parties? They are the cause of the problems that are facing America right now. The lights in the White House are about to go out because there will not be enough money to pay the light bill. America has a $65.9 Trillion dollar fiscal gap over the next 20 years and none of the mainstream candidates are talking about it. Tom Millican has for the last five months.

Those illegal aliens are sending billions of dollars home each and every month. That is money that every community that you and I live in will never see again! And, that amount is growing. If McCain is elected and grants them amnesty that amount will still flow out of this country.

This great country is in a tail spin and only Tom Millican has the answer. Check him out and talk with him. It is time to take back America from those who have sold us out for their own greed and power.
  • Becca,
Nope......just 2(types of republicans), so if you are not rich.....(shame on you!)
Like i said.....pressed for time, i couldn't respond fully; and since the place was overflowing(the Barrack rally, sorry bout the misspell) i came home and decided to answer some e-mail.
I personally do not support terror in any form. And it comes in many forms and from more than one source. What i oppose is using 9-11 as an excuse to occupy a country populated with(......what was that racist term you used for Arabs?) because they have.......oh yeah! OIL! Funny thing is... it just cost me $70 to fill up.(i warned all my NorthRaleigh friends 8 yrs ago that a Bush presidency would lead to $4/gal gas.)--I HATE IT WHEN I"M RIGHT!(LOL).....and they all laughed at me and called me CRAZY.(the typical response of a weak argument).
Insanity would be prosecuting this war any longer, and supporting someone who does.
  • Becca
I brought it on already, you didn't respond LOL
The only thing you took out of my entire post was you being brain dead, that's it!
I think with everything i said, there are more important things in my post then calling you brain dead.

Just ignore everything else that actually matters!

There are three type's, i fall under the category of Middle class American.
Yeah, believe it or not! I haven't been blinded by the whole "The democrats are for the middle and lower class" I see you are.

    Very intelligent response, typical.
I will not give you my time, you are obviously not nearly smart enough to talk to an adult properly.

Try spelling Obama right before you vote for him
  • Becca,
I would assume by "brain dead people" you'd be referring to me perhaps? uh....bring it on. There are 2 types of republicans........rich ones & and suckers.......which are you?
Gotta go to my Obamma meeting...be back in a few hours.
  • Becca for Putting america 1st
hey darling! Just thought i'd nip in...

I love when they call us nazi's, coming from people who support killing babies.

When people refer to us as bigots and those sorts of thing, they are really just saying that we shouldn't kill the enemy, and that Arabs should be as important as your neighbor.

Do these people truly believe this? what the Liberals don't seem to understand is that you can have a big sign waving picket on the grass of the White House supporting the scum that has murdered our innocent citizens with airplanes, you can tell all those losers that you love their countries and you hate your own, the fact remains THEY WILL KILL YOU IF THEY HAVE THE CHANCE.

Yes mentally challenged liberals, they want you, your kids (if YOU havent already murdered them) your neighbors, your family, your mother and your ugly dog DEAD. They will cut your stupid looking head off and post it on the internet.

But, you can support them and kiss their asses (and act like they care) because those rag heads are somewhere else! They cant get to you, because our troops are helping to keep them out of America ( thats the country that you are acting like a moron in, remember her?)

To all of my Conservative darlings, these are the type of brain dead people that surround us every single day, they have love for everyone except Americans, and they live next door.
I always say this, someone who is willing to slam scissors and metal objects into a unborn childs head, is obviously sick themselves.
You can't expect them to make decisions or do anything besides what they want for themselves, they are selfish and disturbed.
They care more about a elephant in africa, then they do about a baby.
Anytime you encounter one of these nuts, ask them if you can help them to a Psychiatrist, thats all they need.

    Cheers
  • Norski.....
it was true then, "Hey! Hey! L-B-J! How many kids have you killed today?!"......
Sadly, nothing has changed. Whose freedom did those 4,000 die for.......mine? yours?
Or KBR's freedom to make obscene profits?
Foreign Policy is still being unduly influenced by the arms industry and other components of War for Profit Lobby. McLame&Hillery are likely to continue to fall prey to this.
  • Speaking of the sixties:

davidwwalters ("George Bush.....and look what we got. 4,000 dead to adorn our cemeteries") reminded me of a ditty from my youth:

"Hey! Hey! L-B-J! How many kids have you killed today?!"
  • First:
"Conservatism is a flawed ideaology [sic]. Conservatives are fascist, racist, nazi [sic] individuals."

Conservatives are also "oppressive," "repressed" and "repressive," "immature," "warmongers," and quite a few other unsavory things. According to the self-described smarter set in academia, at least.

I'm afraid that I can't agree with elizabeth on her characterization of conservatism and conservatives. But then, I don't think that everyone who disagrees with me is a racist Nazi fascist.

And, being a non-liberal, I've had to learn to be courteous and coherent.

    Second:
Plato had his head screwed on straight.

McCain is not an ideal candidate. I started voting about the same time that Tranquility Base was set up on the Moon: In the decades since then, I have never encountered an ideal candidate.

McCain is, however, someone who I think I could tolerate as a president. I do not think that he is likely to emulate Chamberlain. I also think that his comparatively good memory and lack of ties with people whose theology involves cursing America make him a comparatively acceptable candidate.
  • Shawn,
Welcome, and you will learn i am in opposition to right wing rule.
"I am confident he will make a very upstanding President, one that we will be able to be proud of."
I heard this same line 8 years ago by the republicans here in Raleigh about George Bush.....and look what we got. 4,000 dead to adorn our cemeteries. No we don't need 4 more years....
  • dissolvethecorporation
My biggest complaint about McCain is that he consistently votes against repealing tax subsidies for corporations. Although I identify myself as a liberal, in some ways I am more conservative than many here, because I believe, as our founding fathers did, that our government should be run by farmers, small business owners, teachers, and others who take a few years away from their 'real' lives to volunteer as public servants. Professional politicians in the pockets of corporate lobbyists is a cancer that is killing our nation.
  • Mike
NO, NO, NO! We must go to our state conventions and unpledge as many delegates and send as many amendments to the National Convention as possible.
  • Guest
No. Conservatism is a flawed ideaology. Conservatives are fascist, racist, nazi individuals. I am glad that McCain is not a conservative; and I will be happy with any of the three candidates running for office.
