Listening To Young Americans On The Deficit

November 13th, 2009 Francie Grace

You wouldn’t think the bottom line on the $1.6 trillion federal budget deficit and $11.9 trillion national debt crisis could be summed up in a single sentence, but when the right words whizzed by, the Wall Street Journal’s David Wessel was quick to point them out. Words to remember, in a speech by Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office: “The country faces a fundamental disconnect between the services the people expect the government to provide, particularly in the form of benefits for older Americans, and the tax revenues that people are willing to send to the government to finance those services.”

These words underscore the fact that no matter how complicated and increasingly urgent this problem is, it is one which can be understood by most Americans – who can then consider, debate, and decide on options for the best way to reduce the deficit before its sheer weight makes many decisions for us.

Through PublicAgenda.org, FacingUp.org and our Students Face Up to the Nation’s Finances interactive curriculum for college students, we’ve been helping people understand the problem, why it matters, and how to get involved in the process of charting a path to fiscal health. This fall, we extended the reach of the Facing Up curriculum to include high school and middle school students, who have been using our learning materials as part of the University of Virginia’s Youth Leadership Initiative program.

Through that partnership, we also got a chance to hear more about how young people feel about the fiscal crisis which is shaping all of our futures. In a mock election held to give students a chance to speak out on a range of issues, 77 percent favored a balanced budget; an increase in the age for Social Security eligibility was supported by 64 percent; and increasing payroll taxes was favored by 53 percent. Reducing Social Security benefits was opposed by 69 percent.

We’ll be hearing a lot more about these issues beginning on Monday, when we start accepting entries for the Students Face Up to the Nation’s Finances contest for students, with $500 prizes for the best essays and best multimedia presentations on the federal budget deficit and national debt and what ought to be done about it. The contest has two divisions – one for college students, and another for high school students – and all will have a chance to comment on and discuss each other’s ideas.

December 11 is the entry deadline; click here to see the full contest rules. Students Face Up to the Nation’s Finances, a nonpartisan curriculum available at FacingUp.org, is available to users free of charge thanks to a grant from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

The college kids were one of several big groups responsible for this! They were the ones in general who voted for this SOB in the first place. Obama made it clear that he would ruin this country and included in his rhetoric what would happen to our debt. Americans are responsible for figuring this out and being responsible voters! Now we were in debt before and I never agreed with it in the first place, but now it is totally out of control thanks to obama and his supporters.

I find it fairly amusing that after the six republican administration in a row run record deficits while not a single democrat has done likewise, that conservative idiots are still crowing about deficits. One would think they would rather avoid the focus on their glaring failures.

shane--you have some nerve comparing the republicans' deficits to this administrations'. it is laughable but that is what i expect from a damn obama supporter. by the way, where are the jobs and transparency? oh yeah and who is catering to the special interests and responsible for more corruption than we have ever seen? LOL! keep it up. I need a good laugh! You idiots really need to take some economic courses along with some business ones. Actual corporate experience would help you comprehend if you pay attention but most of you fools don't!

Any particular reason to send the same reply 6 times?

I'm somewhat of an Obama supporter but I don't think he's nearly liberal enough. As for Jobs, where are the jobs we were promised EVERY time you selfish weasels came into office and slashed taxes for the rich and gutted all the rules that protected us all from the corporate rapists.

Look at the job creation numbers from the Bureau of Labor. They don't lie. Democrats are CONSISTANTLY better at creating jobs:

Job creation statistics in order...highest annual % increase to lowest.
(Notice that the top 9 were democrats and the bottom 8 were republicans)

U.S. president – Jobs Created (in millions) - Average annual increase

    Franklin Roosevelt1 +5.5 +5.3%
    Franklin Roosevelt3 +7.4 +5.2%
    Lyndon Johnson +9.9 +3.9%
    Jimmy Carter +10.3 +3.1%
    Harry Truman +5.5 +3.0%
    Franklin Roosevelt2 +3.3 +2.6%
    Bill Clinton1 +11.5 +2.6%
    Kennedy/Johnson +5.9 +2.6%
    Bill Clinton2 +11.2 +2.3%
    Ronald Reagan2 +10.8 +2.2%
    Richard Nixon +6.2 +2.2%
    Roosevelt/Truman +2.8 +1.8%
    Nixon/Ford +5.1 +1.7%
    Ronald Reagan1 +5.3 +1.5%
    Dwight Eisenhower1 +2.7 +1.4%
    George H. W. Bush +2.6 +0.6%
    Dwight Eisenhower2 +0.8 +0.4%
    George W. Bush2 +1.9 +0.3%
    George W. Bush1 +0.01 +0.002%
    Herbert Hoover -6.4 -9.0%

I don't give a damn if you like it. The numbers are what they are. And when you spout your nonsense anywhere online, I will see to that those numbers are in your face. Deal with it.

Democrats are also CONSISTANTLY more in control when it comes to raising the debt. The national debt matters more than the deficit, because it makes it harder to conceal "off budget" expenditures like the budget gimmicks Bush used with the Iran and Iraq war "supplementals" (the same way he tried to conceal the loss in manufacturing jobs by trying to add fast food burger cooks to the "manufacturing" job numbers).

"For example, in FY2008 an off-budget surplus of $183 billion reduced the on-budget deficit of $642 billion, resulting in a total federal deficit of $459 billion. Media often report the latter figure. The national debt increased by $1,035 billion between the end of FY2007 and the end of FY2008."

Need proof that Democrats are better at keeping the national debt under control?

And, hey, how's this for a little trip down memory lane? You selfish putz; you freakish clown; you traitor! You sold out your country and your children’s future for a stinkin’ tax cut you immoral scum.

Shane--I think you need to look in the mirror you selfish SOB! You fools can't look at what the numbers mean but you are a typical idiot that pulls in reference material that is meaningless. What happened during the Bush administration that would affect jobs? LOL! Since you and your kind are stupid, I'll fill you in! Let's see the .com crises and 9/11. Both of these cannot be blamed on Bush but you guys will always make up lies to attempt to lay blame where there is none. Numbers do lie when you don't look to the reasoning behind them just as you idiots cannot look at the title of a bill and blame a person for voting against or for something. Smart people understand that the devil is in the details. even you can understand this since your party is buying votes and support by cutting deals with unions and other special interests along with other people in your own party. LOL! corruption comes first in your party! oh I must apologize! I keep forgetting that you are willing to overlook the admitted corruption all in the name of accomplishing obama's failed agenda!

Our country is almost bankrupt thanks to obama. Bush did not do this; however, I have always disgreed with his spending. That is why the republican party is so superior! We quickly speak out when when our leaders go against our principals. you idiots continue to support your person regardless. Bush continued to be criticized from the right for not upholding the principals of our party!

obama has a bunch of educators and lawyers and career politicians in his staff. oh yeah, he also has lobbyists, another broken promise. he purposely didn't hire a lot of successful independent business folks. the jobs summit attendees is just another example of obama ignoring the very people who are the experts at creating jobs. however, the unions and educators received free food and such while they were there. i am glad some received benefits from the failed meeting. excluding the very people who are directly involved in creating jobs is ineffective and a waste of hard-earned taxpayer dollars!

you are the selfish putz and i laugh at your "insults" because I consider them a compliment since they are coming from a damn liberal/democrat idiot. you can't prove that the democrats keep the debt under control when the evidence shows otherwise. LOL! let's see--since obama went on his spending spree, our country's credit rating is now at risk. china has control of our economy and can now strong arm us as they please thanks to the damn democrats/liberals. not only do they hold the keys to our financial stability, it has now become a national security issue but you idiots ignore this. so the democrats/liberals are will to ensure our children and grandchildren have no future just to fund the wasteful spending projects in the "stimulus" and and other unnecessary policies all in the name of attempting to get this country back on its feet. this is selfish! you fools are using polices that are guaranteed to fail (reference the hundreds of posts that are on this site that i created before and after obama's election predicting this and explaining simple economic theory.)

not addressing the current doctor and nursing shortage is selfish. obama admitted in an interview that before insuring more people, we are 150,000 doctors short. republicans discussed this months and months ago and have since let the subject drop because your party can't even get the simple issues resolved. to prevent a definite rationing of healthcare due to the shortage of medical professionals, obama and his mob would have to figure out how to entice people into the field and get them educated by the time any healthcare reform takes affect. LOL! that willl not happen so the damn liberals/democrats will ensure there will be folks who have life threatening conditions that will not get the proper care. hmmmm! your party will be responsible for this selfish debacle also. i know this is all too complicated for your simple mind but until the staffing issue it resolved, any healthcare reform will fail. republicans understand this!

i continue to be amazed at your kind when they throw up things that republicans have done. i disagree with entitlement programs period including social security, welfare and medicare. people in this country have become non-thinkers/planners and want the government to take care of them. this is not the government's responsibility . i also do not think pork projects of any kind should be allowed in bills. such projects should be evaluated on a case by case basis by non-partisan experts and strict criteria should guide the decision of whether to allow them or not. so keep throwing stones at a person who looks at the principals of a party and I'll continue to laugh!

you need to discuss these simple issues with someone on your level because they are too easy to dispute. they are actually too elementary and I'm bored. i guess you don't really understand that you are speaking to someone who is educated in the economic and financial fields and has experience in that world so you will lose your economic arguments every time.

you are too stupid to understand that obama is a failure and has not accomplished anything of value since he has been in office. jimmy carter is looking better and better everyday! LOL!

keep up your posts because i find them comical!

shane--by the way, your party obviously does not believe in equality for all. otherwise, you would not be supportive of the party that created the special provisions in the healthcare bill that ensure inequality for this country. how ironic! i thought you guys pushed for equality but have learned it is all just a "pick and choose" issue and not equality across the board for everyone. LOL! i have heard that thanks to republicans, obama's new failed and very flawed bill will not include the bribes, but it is too late. we have already learned that your party will do anything for power, including going against the will of the people and ensuring corruption is alive and well. you can apologize to everyone who was wise enough to see obama for what he is before the election! you are responsible for voting that SOB into office and the state of this nation as a result. however, you fools can continue to blame others because it is the easiest way out. if obama and his mob can't fix the problems that he campaigned on, someone that is qualified needs to take control before this nation is destroyed!

Shane--After reading a comment you made on another post, i apologize. I see your hatred of true Americans has clouded your mind and you can't think rationally at this point. I have always been one to believe that we should not pick on those less fortunate! You have other issues that can't be solved here and come to this sight to attempt to spread your hatred and twisted views. Rational people do not do this. I can't laugh at the sick but can pity you though. It is sad that you get pleasure in coming to a conservative website and copying what your party does best and that is using deceitful tactics and lying to attempt to prove your radical views. I hope you get the help you need and if you choose to be a part of the "most tolerant" party (this is what they claim), then you need to abide by their principals.

"Shane--After reading a comment you made on another post, i apologize."

That's a lie. You are not apologizing for anything.

" I see your hatred of true Americans has clouded your mind and you can't think rationally at this point. "

That is a an assertion with no foundation or objective evidence to back it up. When will you conservative clowns learn how to debate?

"I have always been one to believe that we should not pick on those less fortunate!"

I doubt this as conservatives have a long and storied history of picking on the weak and powerless. You are essentially fearful bullies who puff up you chest and act tough even though you are frightened little girls. Which isn't to say you aren't capable of horrible voilent attrocities, it's just that you only try when faced with a weaker opponent.

"You have other issues that can't be solved here and come to this sight to attempt to spread your hatred and twisted views. "

Again, you just spout this stuff as fact with nothing to support it. You don't even mention which of my views you see as twisted.

"Rational people do not do this."

You haven't said what it is that I do that isn't rational.

"Rational people do not do this."

If you don't have it in your heart to pity innocent people, turned in by their neighbors for a reward or because their neighbor didn't like them, and then whisked off to a torture prison in Cuba, what makes you think I believe you pity me? It's just proof of even more lying by you. I didn't just call you a liar, I supported with objective facts.

"It is sad that you get pleasure in coming to a conservative website and copying what your party does best and that is using deceitful tactics and lying to attempt to prove your radical views."

I do. I love it. I don't need to preach to the choir. Besides there are more of you kooks on progressive websites than there are here. So tell me about my deceitful tactics. What tactic have I used here that is deceitful. You name me one and I'll name you ten you have used...but you won't care because lying doesn't bother you. Paying taxes does, because you are self centered in the extreme.

"I hope you get the help you need and if you choose to be a part of the "most tolerant" party (this is what they claim), then you need to abide by their principals."

To the extent that the democratic party representatives support liberal policies I will defend them. Otherwise they can do it themselves.
