Would-be Tragedy Inspires Reflection

January 18th, 2009 Billy Hallowell

On Thursday, a feeling of relief overtook anxious New Yorkers when news reports explained that a flock of geese most likely caused the emergency crash-landing of U.S. Airways flight 1549. This news, accompanying images of the safe exit of all 155 passengers, eased the tensions of a great many people who feared that the crash was a replica of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. Thankfully, there was no terroristic catalyst involved.

I often find myself unaware or overlooking the fact that I live and work in a city that has remained a major target of potential terrorist attacks. While it would be foolish to continuously focus on this undeniable fact, it is important to maintain a healthy level of personal awareness and to make occasional consideration of the events and ramifications of the attack that occurred more than seven years ago. During and in the aftermath of last week’s would-be tragedy, it was impossible to avoid this awareness.

At the same time that flight 1549 splashed into the middle of the Hudson River, I was fast at work at my office in Queens. Upon receiving a text message from my father that read: “There is a plane in the Hudson.”  I notified other staff members and went directly to the television, where most of the staff had come to see what was going on. And what a relief it was to see the end result - every man and woman exiting the plane without a single casualty.

Living in the post 9-11 world and sitting in an office with windows that show the Manhattan skyline devoid of the Twin Towers, my first thought prior to turning on the television was “Oh no! Not again.” Luckily, my first reaction was anything but valid. We were truly lucky - as were the inhabitants of flight 1549.

The relief I felt when I saw these men and women being brought to safety was immense. And while I ventured back to my desk, I couldn’t help but think about the horror our nation has gone through this past decade. Had this crash-landing occurred in 2000, the words “act of terrorism” wouldn’t have so readily materialized in my mind. The world has truly changed.

With a new administration coming in, America cannot afford to cut loose when it comes to protecting the homeland. It is these thoughts that have been going through my mind since Thursday afternoon.

Ironically, this morning, I read a short post on The New York Times’ City Room blog entitled, “Sept. 11 Death Toll Rises by One, to 2,752.” The piece read:

Leon Bernard Heyward did not die until last October, at the age of 45. But his name was added Friday to the official list of people who died as a result of the attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

Heyward was exposed to dust while working at Ground Zero. Although his death comes years after the event that has forever changed America, he is yet another hero who is being counted among those murdered by radical Islamic fascists on U.S. soil. His name is not being invoked in this case to create anger in readers; rather, it is being presented to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices our nation was forced to make - sacrifices that continue to plague many of the men and women who volunteered during the aftermath of the attacks.

Thankfully, flight 1549 landed safely and has been slated an accident. Luckily, we have not had to endure another 9-11 and I pray that we will never have to again. The new administration - and most importantly Americans - mustn’t forget what happened in 2001. While it often seems embedded in the past, families, individuals and policy-makers need to remember all that was lost so that our nation does not become complacent again.

I am sad to say that we live in a SICK SICK world

May 5th, 2008 Urban Conservative

The following post is a rant. It has nothing to with politics but I feel like I need to let off some steam, vent a little and talk about my feelings (yes, I do have feelings).  Right now, I am really sick of all the “Obama & Hillary? news and ALL political news for that matter, so lately I have been doing my best to filter it all out.  I was on Drudge earlier today and came across a story of about 3 dead infants found in freezer in Germany.  I was stunned. It broke my heart. I felt vulnerable because it was personal to me.  I can’t even imagine ever hurting a single hair on my two beautiful angels; and to think that someone did this to these poor innocent babies hurts me, tremendously.  It sickens me and makes me want to vomit.  And, then it got me thinking of the poor woman in Austria and the pain that her and her children endured.  This story clearly exemplifies the depths of evil that humanity is capable of committing.

It’s a true story about a psychopath named Josef Fritzl. This sad excuse for a human sexually abused, tortured, raped and physically assaulted his own daughter for 24 years.  According to the police, he kept her for in a small soundproofed cellar with four beds and a bathroom; and she gave birth to a total of seven children (including twins, one of whom died) all of whom had been fathered by this bastard.  Three of his kids had been imprisoned with their mother their whole lives when they were found—daughter Kerstin and sons Stefan and Felix, who are aged 19, 18, and 5.

Friends should not let friends wear Che Guevara t-shirts

June 5th, 2007 Urban Conservative

I was at the mall over the weekend and saw a young couple wearing matching Che Guevara t-shirts.  I hesitated for a moment, but decided to ask them why they idolized this man…here was the woman’s response, “he is a symbol for all Latinos that we should fight for our rights and freedoms…and anyone who is oppressed can make a difference?.  I was irritated at her response but admired her passion for a man she knew nothing about.  The fact is that Che Guevara was not oppressed or poor. He was a medical doctor, having originally trained to become a doctor at the University of Buenos Aires.

It is strange to me that today’s generation can idolize a man best known as a cold-blooded murderer; a man with no regard for human life and an infinite hatred towards people; something he preached time and time again. This woman I talked to at the mall was obviously ignorant to historical facts, as are most liberals.

Hatred is an element of struggle; relentless hatred of the enemy that impels us over and beyond the natural limitations of man and transforms us into effective, violent, selective, and cold killing machines. Our soldiers must be thus; a people without hatred cannot vanquish a brutal enemy. - Source

It’s not just today’s generation that’s ignorant and uninformed. Growing up in East San Jose in the early 1990s, I saw Che’s ugly mug quite often; and, for the most part, these people (some were my friends) knew exactly what they were doing and the message they were sending: they agreed with what Che stood for – hate. This may shock some of you overly emotional liberals so get out the kleenex. This man that you celebrate, tattoo on your abdomens, and clothe on your bodies was a murderer and admits to killing or ordering the deaths of approximately 2000 people directly; and he was indirectly responsible for countless other deaths. He regarded any dissent to the revolution as grounds for murder. Here is another quote from Che as he continued to preach his religion of hate to some guerilla thugs in Angola:

Blind hate against the enemy creates a forceful impulse that cracks the boundaries of natural human limitations, transforming the soldier into an effective, selective and cold killing machine. A people without hate cannot triumph against the adversary

While this communist punk was responsible for the deaths of only a few thousand people; he was of course not on the same level as Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Kim. But then again, they don’t have t-shirts with their portraits on them so maybe he was on the same level. Nonetheless, Che got dealt with in Bolivia before he had a chance to reach his claim to fame by killing millions of people.

The moral of the story is this.  Che Guevara was a murderer, terrorist, a coward, an idiot; and a communist punk a$$ motherslucker…..and anyone who idolizes this piece of crap is a loser.

Again, I tell you that friends should not let friends wear Che Guevara t-shirts. Peace and long live Israel.

Why Liberals Hate Me!

May 19th, 2007 Urban Conservative

The reason most liberals hate guys like me is that I don’t fit that typical “conservative? stereotype. Yah know…the white, upper-class, Capitol Hill Republican from the south who listen to country music.  No, I have no problem with my fellow brethren just mentioned because for the most part we hold true to the same conservative values; but that’s just not me.  I’m a new breed of conservative…think Conservative 2.0; yet to be fully defined. I consider myself a second generation of conservative thought and attitude.

Here are some other reasons why I get no love from liberals (in no particular order of importance):

  • I’m a minority in their eyes and aren’t all minorities supposed to be democrats? (although I consider myself an American first)
  • I’m educated with a graduate degree (with no financial assistance from the government)
  • I’m charismatic, hip and urban of course
  • I’m a recovering democrat (really, I am.)
  • I know my sh@#! Meaning…I’m informed about many issues and make uninformed liberals look silly, especially the ones in San Francisco that try and debate me
  • I hold firm in my belief structure; even though I am surrounded by liberal ideology and actions

I, personally don’t hate liberals at all. Some of my best friends, co-workers, former managers are all liberals; and they are great people.  It’s all about tolerance, right? Isn’t that what all the left wing groups cry about when they want acceptance?

A Great Example of What “NOT” to do as a Parent!

April 23rd, 2007 Urban Conservative

Okay, old news already but I actually wrote this last week. Psychopath Alec Baldwin unleashed a volcanic outburst of threats and insults to his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a “thoughtless little pig,” and bashing her mom Kim Basinger. And I just learned that a family judge was so alarmed after hearing the tape, that she has temporarily barred Baldwin from having any contact with his child.

And here is the ironic thing (now, you know I have mix a little politics with this):

Mr. Baldwin is an extreme liberal! I can’t imagine a liberal filled with so much hatred for his daughter. Aren’t liberals the ones who are trying to pass legislation in California making it a misdemeanor for parents who spank thier children? Also, let’s not forget that last year a judge wanted a psychologist to evaluate Alec to determine whether he was mentally capable of seeing his daughter. Seems to me that Alec needs some counseling to help with his mental disorder.

Bush is Satan Bulletin on Myspace

April 21st, 2007 Urban Conservative

Today I received a bulletin message on Myspace from someone I accepted as a friend a few months back and I was appalled at what I read. Now what was even more interesting was the link at the bottom pointed to Dennis Kucinich’s Myspace profile…something about impeaching Bush. You can read for yourself.

What caught me off guard with the bulletin was calling President Bush - Satan. Of course, this is not a new tactic; We have all seen the Cindy Sheehan groupies with signs insinuating the same nonsense and rhetoric.

Now this person either has a degree in liberal idiocy or is completely uniformed about the dangers of Ahmadinejad. It’s people like this that give me so much to write about in this blog.  Thank you.

Oh, and yes I did remove him from my buddy list.

Condi, the Football Commentator

February 2nd, 2007 Urban Conservative

Tonight while watching Sportscenter, I saw Condi, who says her dream job would be to head the NFL, dropped her diplomatic guard and predicted Indianapolis would win the Super Bowl this weekend.

“I really like both Chicago and Indianapolis but I think Indianapolis is going to win it and that would be a good thing,” said Rice, a longtime Cleveland Browns fan, when asked by reporters to predict the winner.

Personally, I think she would be great as the NFL Commissioner, but she would be a much better President of the United States! I also think the Colts are going to spank the Bears!
